Empire Auriga – Ascending the Solar Throne (Moribund)

…Ascending the Solar Throne is probably your best bet. Oddly relaxing and peaceful, it’s a testament to how far the ‘black metal’ tag can be pushed without sounding like it was misused. While there are just a few moments that seem to drag, the overall impression the album leaves is that of curiosity and wonder. With many black metal bands taking to the woods and trees, it’s nice to see that some are now exploring space and otherworldly dimensions….

Death – Leprosy Reissue (Relapse)

…n the original. Benefiting, of course, are staple numbers like the title track, “Left to Die,” and “Mutilation,” which is lead guitarist Rick Rozz’s best moment on record. And, “Pull the Plug” remains ever the classic, with its spirited, ready-for-shout-a-along chorus. The bonus features such a two live sets and demo tracks are of muddled quality, which is to be expected from recordings that originated in the late 80s. But, the subtle tweaks via t…

April 2014 Demo Tribunal

…ks shift focus heavily to the keys (“Kings of Greed”) whereas others shift back to the guitars (“Devilspeed Loathekill”). There’s a good sense of groove (see “Reap”) to go along with the faster tracks (“Masses Flee,” “This Coming Nightmare”), and even an acoustic track with some female vocals (“Under a Canopy of Stars”), which keep things interesting. While it’s nothing particularly new, Meadows End does it well. – Kyle McGinn (Meadows End officia…

Twitch of the Death Nerve – A New Code of Morality (Comatose Music)

…album of the year but this is quite competently played material. Shifting between fast paced and slamming sections that would feel quite at home amongst the NYDM crowds, A New Code of Morality does tend to hinge on the lyrical department to give them much distinction between their (lessening) brethren. There are a few riffs that stand out (“Of Rutting Beasts and Drifting Herds,” “The Locard Principle”), but this is meant to be a balls-to-the-wall…

Satan’s Host – Metal From Hell

…llow any formula or trend. Dead Rhetoric: Virgin Sails is the second album back with Harry Conklin, how did the writing process go. Was it smoother this time around having a steady line-up? Conklin: There have been two albums before Virgin Sails; By the Hands of the Devil and CELEBRATION: For the Love of Satan. The celebration album was a rebirth of the age of ELI era and our new sound with me (LEVIATHAN) back in the fold. Pat and I worked hard to…

Avatarium – Avatarium (Nuclear Blast)

…ndlemass? It’s a logical one as those aforementioned riffs start to gain traction (opener “Moonhorse” is a prime example of this), yet peppered between are bouts of lush, classical guitar bits, no doubt embedded to give Smith the necessary operating room to cast her soft vows. She’s pretty engaging throughout; more of a complimentary piece than the focal point, although her work on the excellent “Boneflower” and closing “Lady in the Lam” suggests…

SEPULTURA Releases Video For “The Vatican”

…f the Church… “We all know dark moments in the Catholic religion. “One of our concerns (or bets) was ‘let’s bet on how many places the clip will be banned.’ I believe that regarding prohibition, backlash, and so on, this video clip comes with it all.” The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart was released on October 29 via Nuclear Blast Records….

Soulfly – October 25, 2013 – Ground Zero, Spartanburg, SC

…ing through the crowd while playing the final solo of “Overkill,” bringing back a kind of unpredictability and danger that often seems more like a distant memory than a present reality. Soulfly took over to close out the night, and by this time, the crowd had filled out pretty significantly. Max Cavalera and crew instantly launched into a two-hit offering from the group’s latest record, Savages, opening with the bruising midtempo stomp of “Bloodsh…

June 2013 Rapid Fires

…such an event, but the callous sonic pummeling these lads dish out on feedback-loving cuts like “Coven of the Larynx” and “Embrace” make Eyehategod sound like a walk in the park. Well, close – Full of Hell at least get up and at them with some d-beat crust, but man, this album is about as tidy and pleasant as a toilet full of vomit. Yuck! – David E. Gehlke (Full of Hell on Facebook) Gates of Hell – Critical Obsession (Rastilho Records) Hailing fr…

Dillinger Escape Plan – One of Us is the Killer (Sumerian/Party Smasher/Inc.)

…ning one-two barrage of “Prancer” and “When I Lost My Bet” nudge their way back into those banzai spazz-core days. Well, not “nudge” – they throw elbows and kicks, as the dissonant guitars rage and Greg Puciato is off his rocker, as usual. “When I Lost My Bet” is particularly disheveled, a song the band premiered at this year’s installment of Revolver Magazine’s Golden Gods awards. Talk about an audience that can’t hang with this stuff… Puciato is…

Amaranthe – The Nexus (Spinefarm Records)

…ince she was supposedly in the running for the Nightwish gig several years back. She’s definitely not as versatile as Anette Olzon, yet she makes some quality choices on “Invincible” and “Theory of Everything.” The triple-vocal idea isn’t as groundbreaking as the band probably thinks (blame it on the overflow of bands doing good cop/bad cop), so The Nexus is left to fight off its overly commercial vibe. However, their songs are better than Sonic S…

GWAR – Bottomless Holes and BBQ

…I’m sure Ian Mckay and Henry [Rollins] would disagree with me on this. But back then, those dudes were dicks. I use to get my ass kicked at those shows all the time, now granted I might have been a dick myself. I was still trying to figure out what punk rock was. I saw the Sex Pistols and The Ramones, but when I saw hardcore for the first time I was confused and intrigued. Dead Rhetoric: What were the early days of Death Piggy like? Brockie: So I…

VHӦL- VHӦL (Profound Lore Records)

…, Yob, Agalloch and a few other bands, being why “super group” keeps being bandied about on the internet. Cool band pedigree aside, you will be hard pressed to find more exciting music to listen to this year. I challenge you. The much buzzed about self-titled release from San Francisco’s VHӦL is around 45 minutes of everything a headbanger with any level of taste and distinction could ask for. All the best in Black Metal tremolo, furious thrashing…

Supuration – CU3E (Listenable Records)

…. Despite the long-term quality, however, this one can be a dense nut to crack at first. Accessibility, owing to the musical heritage of the members most likely, is not the focal point the music, though it does come out over time (“The Incongruents” is an real killer). That being said, it doesn’t keep this from being an incredibly solid release, the third in what appear to be a series of thematically-tethered albums. Also makes it a damn shame it’…

Wintersun – Fighting the Battle Against Time

…guys are doing is quite a bit. Do you mind this process? Is it fun to get back into it after not doing it for so long? Mäenpää: It´s a nice change, ‘cause I was working on the album for so long. I felt like a hermit. It´s fun and exciting for now at least, but I have to admit it´s not my favorite thing to do for a long time. I´d rather get back soon just making new music. I´m not much of a salesman, so I leave that mostly to better hands: our man…

The Rods – Threesome For Vengeance

…ive us a very negative image of the band and a lot of information was held back from us. Thanks to the internet we know that’s not the case. The outpouring of support from the fans is amazing. Blistering.com: As a producer, what would you say are your two or three most memorable recordings you were happy to be a part of? Canedy: The Anthrax albums [Fistful of Metal and Spreading the Disease] always stand out. I love the band, I knew Charlie Benant…

Dark Fortress – It’s A Deathexplosion

…e band keep Dark Fortress connected to its roots, they put the nerds’ feet back on the ground if they space out too much. A lot of our qualities stem from this ever-present contrast. Blistering.com: The album has a great amount of balance to it, but some of the songs that really stand out are the slower, more atmospheric ones like “As the World Keels Over” and “Wraith.” Which style of songs best showcase DF – the fast, traditional black metal numb…

The Forsaken – Beyond Redemption (Massacre Records)

…he band to rest. Well folks, I’m pleased to tell you that The Forsaken are back…and you can bet your bottom dollar that after nine years of relative inactivity, they’re pissed as all hell. The title track wastes no time in getting nasty with thrash-oriented riffing, blasts galore, and a wailing solo to top things off. There’s some serious energy here- the band is showing no signs of age or of the apathy that often comes with years of experience in…

Sabaton – Carolus Rex (Nuclear Blast Records)

…release, but hey, hats off to Sabaton for circling the wagons and getting back up to speed in such a short amount of time. Carolus Rex will go down as the last studio album with the band’s breakthrough lineup, and like their other bodies of work, it’s highly thematic and regal-sounding power metal. And for once, the Swedes appear to have whipped up some songs fitting of their over-the-top presentation. A concept album based on Gustav II aka, “The…

Mpire of Evil – Hell to the Holy (Scarlet Records)

…r “Hellpsawn,” which possesses a nimble little riff-section from Dunn. In fact, Dunn is probably the best thing about Hell to the Holy, as it appears he still has a few riff-tricks up his sleeve, as evidenced on “Waking Up Dead” and the title track. However, Lant still has the darndest time staying on the beat, with flailing tempos going all over the place, which again, was a common happening in Venom. Some old-timers are still in the game because…
