General Surgery – Like An Ever Flying Limb (Relapse Records)

A band that makes it almost too easy us on perpetually lazy metal scribes, Sweden gore-grinders General Surgery have returned with an EP in the form of Like An Ever Flying Limb. Clearly a take on Dismember’s classic Like An Ever Flying LimbLime An Ever Flying Limb follows virtually the same formula as the band’s previous releases. Translation: Symphonies of Sickness-era Carcass worship is in full effect.

Since the Swedes don’t have to put a whole lot of thought into their compositions, the running time is a measly 11 minutes. In comparison to some bands who use EP’s for the sole purpose of airing out long songs that generally wouldn’t fit on a traditional album, it makes this move by General Surgery confusing. You mean to us they couldn’t come up with another two or three songs to make this a full-length? Is it that hard to write a General Surgery song? Is the sky blue?

The band’s unabashed Carcass aping does have some merit, as chunky, blood-soaked numbers like the title track and “Dark Cyanotic Hypostasis” rumble down the death metal strip, as visions of internal organs flying over the place come to mind. And since the EP is so short, one can make it through repeated listens without even realizing the six songs have passed. Ah, the joys of being a mindless gory death metal band. Kudos to you, General Surgery, for taking the safe route.
