Bloody Cumshot – Deflorantism (Self-Released)

One of those bands that if you take everything at the face value, you’ll potentially end up skipping over it. Exhibit A – the band name. Seems to fit with something that would exemplify a gory slam death band. Add fuel to the fire by taking a quick glance at the song titles, such as “Chlamydia Rain” and “Breast Ripper,” and viewing the cover art and you’ve got a solid case for what you might expect to be ‘generic death slam band version 4,943.4.’ But if you dare to take a closer examination by clicking play, you’ll discover that Bloody Cumshot is a one-man Japanese act playing death metal yes, but this particular music owes much more to Sweden than it does any other part of the world. In short, it’s frantic Gothenburg-worshipping material with a side of melodic black added for good measure.

If that last sentence struck your fancy, that’s really all you need to know about this one. If Gothenburg adoration is your jam (which it is for many of us here at DR), then you are absolutely going to love what Bloody Cumshot is doing. They take the furious rage of old-timey Soilwork or In Thy Dreams, give it a touch of modern flavors via The Black Dahlia Murder, and hit the gas pedal as hard as possible. So you get a genuine steamroller of an album, but thankfully the melodic elements are so prevalent you are not going to be blurred half way through it. The solo product of Junya, he does an incredible job of packing each track with a stunning amount of impressive riffs and melodies. The riffs are frequently high-speed rippers, and the melodies are the type that really grab your ear on first listen and don’t let go. The aforementioned “Chlamydia Rain” is an absolute bruiser in the riff department, bouncing from speed runs into some mid-tempo moments where the flashy melodies take centerstage and soar into some very elegant heights. Triumphant melodies really are the icing on the death/thrash cake, with some other highlights to be found in opener “White Lies” and the ever so slightly slower “Strangle Your Life.” If you are wondering where the blackened sprinkles come in, be sure to check out “Tribadism,” where the blasting drums hit with more buzzing riffs and tremolo-esque melodies that twist around the chorus.

Falling into that category of ‘I can’t believe it’s one person,’ Bloody Cumshot deliver an explosive dose of Gothenburg-styled melodies updated to modern times that’s sure to win any genre fans over. As a second effort, Deflorantism showcases Junya’s talent as something to keep your eyes and ears on in the future.
