When it wants to be, grind can be good times across the board. When it doesn’t want to be (read: when it opts to be crusty and dirty), then it’s some of the most worthless music metal can offer. In the case of Total Fucking Destruction, Hater is a manic, fun romp through politically-motivated grind, aided by a man that is quickly becoming synonymous with modern grind, Brutal Truth drummer Rich Hoak. Therefore…this is good times.
Much like 2008’s Peace, Love, and Total Fucking Destruction, Hater runs through a vast spread of quick, effective songs with ease. Hoak’s drums are out front (like they were on its predecessor), and it immediately gives the album a thicker tone than most grind albums. Hoak doubles up on vocals, and he’s got a punky-feel to his vocals, a trait that is most noticeable on the goofy “Meat Without Feet” and the wacky “Attack of the Supervirus” trilogy. Granted,Hater is not totally centered on being off-beat and eccentric, as the melodic edge of “Dudehammer” would suggest otherwise.
TFD may not kick up the firestorm that Wormrot currently is, but as their tenure on the scene indicates (the band is now into their second decade of existence), they’re a grind force to be reckoned with. Hater packs vitriol, punch, a message, and everything else you can think of. Grind on.
