So I decided to check out this here band Shun and their new album Dismantle, their second full-length for Small Stone Recordings. You can expect a potent power trio who embrace elements of psychedelic, stoner, doom, fuzz rock, punk and metal that has a throwback edge to the musical cocktail present. Right away I was struck by the 1990’s feel of the whole record. Now, whether or not that’s by design or just a happy accident, I dug what I heard
Out of the gate, first two songs “Blind Eye” and “Aviator” really get us going, with tasty guitars, and a warm vibe. The same can also be said for “Storms”, which wound up being my favorite on the whole thing. Then there’s “NRNS” which is about as subtle as a chainsaw. Still, it’s a rocker that should most people up and moving. Meanwhile, “You’re the Sea” very much has a Screaming Trees meets School of Fish feel to it, so obviously this was another winner.
“Through the Looking Glass” and “The Getaway” kick ass while still maintaining that feel of the 90’s. At the end of the day Dismantle is a very good album that captures the feel of then and now. Shun is a band definitely worth checking out, especially for those who miss the sound of the 70s colliding into the alternative aspects of the 90s.
