Expulsion – Wasteworld (Deepsend Records)

Those well-entrenched in the underground may think this Explusion means a resurrection of the Swedish death troop who released two albums in the mid-90’s before dissolving in 1999. However, you would be wrong – this five piece hail from The Netherlands, putting out The Mass Insanity EP in 2005 before hitting the streets with their debut album, Wasteworld.

Already in the favor of underground acclaim with a legible logo, doom gloom, and stormy cover art, Wasteworld grabs the listener by the scruff of their collar and proceeds to pummel eardrums and appendages for 35-minutes. Displaying an affinity for American speed death with slight nods to thrash and black metal when necessary, songs such as “Land of Empty Graves” and “Messianic Shadows” owe as much inspiration to Sadus and Revenant as to Kreator (circaPleasure to Kill) and maybe a pinch of Dissection.

The guitars just pepper your brain with jackhammer runs from the low chords to the high pitch string squeals and I’d certainly want a front seat to hear and see the double bass and snare synchronization M.S. (no real names given ) provides through infinite Red Bull chasers. AB’s vocal style employs a montage of Mille’s sandpaper attack with more of a clear, forceful attitude and I also enjoy the historical quotes from Twain, Hitler, Plato and even Ronald Reagan that aid the lyrical landscape in their booklet.

Soundlodge Studios in Germany took on the challenge of capturing Expulsion sonically without making the band sound sloppy or disjointed, as it’s rare to find lightning fast death/thrash as memorable as this. Extreme metal with talent musicians at the helm, Expulsion demands your attention.
