So I’ve been pretty quiet this last week or so. Now I’ve gotta ask you…ARE YOU READY TO RAGE WITH SOME MEATY DEATH METAL?!? Cuz if you are, have I got a record for you! Unmerciful is back with a new album in Devouring Darkness, their fourth studio album since arriving on the scene from Kansas in the early 2000’s. From the word “go” that’s what this disc does. You’ll feel a lot like Alex does in A Clockwork Orange when he’s strapped into the chair for a bit of the old ‘ultra violence’. A swirl of riffs will wrap themselves around you like a coiled snake, and the drums will cave your head in
First up (and best up) is “Devouring Darkness ” the title track and best feel for what the band is capable of. Clinton Appelhanz (Guitars/Bass), Jeremy Turner (Guitars/Bass), Trynt Kelly (Drums) and new vocalist Josh Riley absolutely rip a hole in the sky with this one, so well done! The opening salvo of “Miracle In Fire” and “Unnatural Ferocity” sounds like the theme to a zombie apocalypse. You can almost hear them going “BRA-A-A-INS” like the dead in that one movie we all love. Don’t act like you don’t know which one, either.
“Relentless Malevolence” is short, yet it’s anything BUT sweet. It’s more like the soundtrack to heads being split open. “Vomit You Out” is an excellent cover of the Origin tune and it’s one I keep coming back to. No doubt, so will you. “Voracious Lunacy” and closer “Vengeance Transcending” wrap the record up with great vengeance and furious anger, a la the great Samuel L. All told Unmerciful have hit it out of the park with Devouring Darkness. This is one you’ll most likely be blasting over and over again.
Standout Tracks: “Devouring Darkness”, “Vomit You Out”, “Unnatural Ferocity”, “Relentless Malevolence”.
