Otargos – Fuck God-Disease Process (Season of Mist/Underground Activists)

Rating: 7.5/10

Not only is Fuck God-Disease Process the black metal album title of the year, it’s the black metal album title of the decade. We’ve waited nine long years for a title like this, so Otargos better not let things go to waste on this, their third full-length.

Predictably, Fuck God-Disease Process (which we’re going to try to say as many times as possible during the course of this review) runs the gamut from blast-happy BM (“The Wall of Galaxies”), atmosphere-laden BM (“La Genèse De Dieu”) and brutal BM (“Nullabsolut”). There’s an onus on filtering in the atmosphere, which often works to the band’s advantage, as there is not one thing they do exponentially well. More or less, these Frenchman are the sum of their influences, which usually entails the usual black metal suspects.

And such is becoming the overriding theme with modern black metal. There’s just so much of it (like, TONS of it) that for a band like Otargos to make any headway, they need a clever album title like Fuck God-Disease Process. It catches the eye, that’s for sure. Otargos on the other hand, should get started on some killer t-shirts with the album title in big, bold letters on the back.
