Haemmorhage – Hospital Carnage (Relapse Records)

Rating: 6.5/10

Full-blown Carcass worship has long been an exciting proposition to death metal bands without an original bone in their bodies, and for Spain’s Haemmorhage, mining the vintage works of Symphonies of Sickness andNecroticism has yet to fall out of favor. On Hospital Carnage, the band make little attempt to do anything but sound like classic Carcass, so in turn, it’s not a total wash.

With gnashed riffs, gurgled vocals, and the necessary medical theme (Carcass used to take their lyrical themes from medical textbooks), Hospital Carnage has quite the feral bark, but no real bite. Outside of the rumbling on “Fomite Fetish” (the only chorus that was memorable) and the bouncy opening riff-action of “Tumor Donor,” the bulk of the album fails to make any headway. And naturally, there has to be wordy songtitle in the bunch, this time it’s the short and sweet “Intravenous Molestation Of Obstructionist.” Awesome.

Those long exposed to the greatness of early-90’s Carcass won’t be duped by the maneuverings of Haemmorhage. Hospital Carnage is almost too predictable for its own good, making one wonder if people will eventually stop giving bands like this the benefit of the doubt. You don’t even have to listen to this thing to know what it’s going to sound like…
