Dusty Rose Gang – A-One From Day One (RidingEasy Records)

Occasionally beyond the heavier coverage that makes this site tick, we also indulge in some of the classic or traditional elements that started the scene. That’s where Detroit, Michigan’s Dusty Rose Gang lands for this album A-One From Day One. Incorporating a sound that is equally doomy as it is rockin’, add in a bit of that raw, unbridled angst next to some sinister grooves and you’d be apt to think that these tracks could have easily hit the scene in the early 70s. The quartet blaze a familiar ground in terms of substance and style – cohesive in approach while the internal chemistry song by song will have listeners captivated in a multitude of ways.

Take the 6:15 “Person of Light” for example. The bluesy guitar tone mirrors the rhythmic vocal approach Dusty Rose employs, the solos erupt in these cascades of electric smoke clouds breaking free over the horizon, while the bass / drum components service the foundational needs in this mid-tempo, pocket groove that swings like only bluesy, stoner / doom can. Opener “Love Bug” shimmers in this guitar buildup fashion, as if MC5 and Jimi Hendrix are in a dual fight to the death, only to have Ozzy-era Black Sabbath join the party, the spirited runs elevating the main swinging power chords to another level of ecstasy. A killer drum solo starts “Party Back Jack” in a Led Zeppelin-ish way, before the jagged guitar, bass, drum combinations kick in, Dusty once again using his emotional main vocals in retro/classic mannerisms, the main hooks certain to elevate audiences stateside to worldwide. Even smaller feedback elements enhance arrangements. Back half favorite “Feel Me” is another standout due to some incendiary guitar parts that soon shift into this dreamy, quieter instrumental sequence before returning to the jam-like heavy rock foundation with some Thin Lizzy-esque cultural aspects near the conclusion of this almost six-minute track.

A deviation from all the modern, melodic death, or symphonic-laden metal, Dusty Rose Gang takes this scribe back to youthful days when bands just plugged in and played. A-One From Day One provide a half-hour retrospective on 70’s doom/heavy rock chock full of tasty treats – devour it while you can.
