Cannabis Corpse/Ghoul – Splatterhash (Tankcrimes)

Rating: 8/10

What does it mean to be a gimmick?  Cannabis Corpse and Ghoul are certainly two bands that have had the moniker thrown at them quite frequently.  But to have the lasting power that both bands have enjoyed, it’s clear that hood-wearing or a fixation on the green stuff (no, we aren’t talking money here) may have given each band their hook, but an underlying musical prowess have kept both from becoming remnants of the past.

First up, Cannabis Corpse provides us with “The Inhalation Plague” and “Shatter Their Bongs” (love the reference to Cannibal Corpse’s “Shatter Their Bones”).  Both of which showcase the band’s marijuana-fueled “high”-energy parody of Cannibal Corpse at their best.  Their mash up of death and thrash riffing on “The Inhalation Plague” is sure to keep you on your toes, while the gang chorus of “Shatter Their Bongs”  is sing-along worthy.

Ghoul finishes off the split with two tracks of their own.  “Inner Sanctum” is by far the longer of the two, showing their splatterthrash is still fully intact and memorable as ever, but the punchy “Spill Your Guts” is the highlight of the split.  Featuring a real humdinger of a riff at around the one-minute mark, its brevity is forgiven due to its thrashing tempo.

Splatterhash provides an enjoyable romp from two bands revel who in the absurd. Seemingly a perfect match to create such a split, this is easily a worthwhile pick up for fans of either band.  The only downside is it’s far-too-short time frame of only 12 minutes will make you feel like it’s time to clean up just after the party has begun.
