Post Mortal Possession – Perpetual Descent (Lord of the Sick Recordings)

After a build-up of EPs and singles over the course of the last 5 years, Pittsburgh’s Post Mortal Possession finally bring forth their first full-length album. The brutal death metal act has pulled no punches with previous releases in the past, and that holds true for this release as well. Perpetual Descent is precisely the type of album that death metal fans are craving.

Expanding the formula that has worked well for the band in the past, those who enjoyed the mix of ‘90s acts like Suffocation and Deeds of Flesh, where technical riffing was favored but never at the cost of the song itself, should find themselves at home here. But there’s also a groovier element that has been incorporated as well, and makes the material a bit catchier without going overboard. The upfront brutality is still at the center of things, but a song like “Embryonic Reincarnation” enjoys some bounce to it, with rolling grooves that are bound to get even the most dedicated, arms-crossed headbanger to start moving around. The combination of slams, grooves, speedy and intricate riffing, and even an occasional melody provide a bounty of flavors to take in, a stark contrast from what many death metal acts tend to employ. Equally compelling are the vocals, which take in a large variety of extremity as well, from gurgles to rasps to anything in between. They never fall prey to production either, getting a monstrous bottom end to keep it quite heavy and organic, but not reverting to something that makes one immediately think of the times of death metal past.

Continuing to give a refreshing take on the brutal death metal sound, Post Mortal Possession do not disappoint on this long-awaited full-length debut. A varied approach to things keeps it fresh, and a further enhancement of the formula assures that they will continue to tweak things as they continue. You can’t go wrong with this one if you want something that’s extreme.
