Nails – Unsilent Death (Southern Lord)

Rating: 8/10

Hey, let’s get in and get out, and while we’re at it, let’s steamroll some people. Methinks that’s the general thought process for Nails, who take bludgeoning death/grind to new levels on the all-too-quick Unsilent Death. And by being this fast and furious, Nails leave little room for interpretation – they just slay.

Most of these 10 songs don’t even graze the 3-minute mark, as post-Swedish death metal riffs (check out the massive crunch toward the back-end of the title track for proof) rule the roost. The sound provided by Converge’s Kurt Ballou is totally searing, making this power trio sound as thick as fuck, or rather, hard as nails. Sorry, had to toss that one in there. But seriously, there’s no let up here, especially when songs like “Conform” and “Your God” come calling.

Some buzz is already forming around Nails and for good reason – they’re easily one of the more exciting newcomers to hit the scene of late. Unsilent Death will tear your head off, brevity and all. Get this and get moving.
