Murder Construct – Murder Construct EP (Relapse Records)

Rounding up a bunch of death metal veterans for a project is hardly new (actually, it’s quite overdone), yet when it’s done right, and when it sounds like the band actually gives a fuck, the results are awfully hard to dispute. Case in point, the self-titled debut EP from Murder Construct, who boast members of Cattle Decapitation, Exhumed, Uphill Battle, and Intronaut, just to name a few.

Boasting seven songs at a robust 17 minutes, the EP grinds much in the same vein as Cattle Decap or Gore Metal-era Exhumed did, with as much ferocity as there should be. Opener “Control” kicks things off with a rather frenzied blast-beat portion, with singer Travis Ryan belching all over the thing. “Destroy Babylon” moves in a Napalm Death-like direction (think Harmony Corruption), while “End of An Error” lets the bottom drop out in the middle with a tense build-up, only to evolve into a disharmonic guitar segment that actually steps outside of the traditional death metal boundaries.

The issue with bands of this ilk is never whether they can actually pull off pummeling and interesting death metal/grindcore, it’s a question of if they can maintain over the course of an album. An EP like this perfectly suited for the type of free-for-for-all death metal Murder Construct is purveying. For now, and as mentioned above, there’s a little fucking around to do. Thank God.
