All Pigs Must Die – God Is War (Southern Lord Records)

Somewhat of a post-metal/hardcore supergroup, with members of Converge, Bloodhorse, and Hope Conspiracy in the mix, All Pigs Must Die is a d-beat du jour that doesn’t let up. On their debut God Is War, the quartet peel out eight shards of fast and frenzied metal that is ripe for the breaking. It’s like a sucker-punch, almost. That’s how quickly this album comes and goes.

Backed by a Kurt Ballou (Converge) production job God Is War has the necessary fuzz and feedback to allow those gnashing riffs (think of lots of half-stacks piled together) to take form. So when singer Kevin Baker starts to bark and roar on opener “Death Dealer,” it’s pretty evident where this one is going to go. Coupled with a relatively Swedish-sounding guitar tone, the results from that point forward are easy to figure out, with cuts like “The Blessed Void” diving into an intensity that would make Disfear proud, while the 8-minute plus “Sadistic Vindicator” sees the band relish in a more noise-based pose.

Cleary some kind of itch the collective members needed to scratch, All Pigs Must Die is not a beauteous thing of work and while it doesn’t topple the unbridled fury of Converge, God Is War is suitably pissed-off in all the right spots. And being PO’d is fun.
